I'd love a new car and I am fascinated by Tesla — I'd get a Tesla 3 in a heartbeat. But it just doesn't make any financial sense
I do 12 miles a day, 3 days a week. Plus trips to appointments, shopping and social use. Total mileage every year, for the last three years hasn't been above 5,000 miles (average 4,500 miles).
I drive a "normal" diesel 2016 Kia Sportage, AWD, automatic, so nothing special or outlandish. Last year my costs were £290 tax, £300 insurance, £350 on tyres and roughly £800 on fuel. £1,740 for the year — plus the cost of the vehicle after residual value is calculated. That gives me an estimated cost of £312 a month or 83p per mile.
The cheapest EV on the work salary sacrifice scheme is over £300 a month for a tiny limited range noddy toy clown car. If I got a car equivalent size to the Sportage it would be over £600 a month.
Despite what eco-fascist Mad Ed says, for large numbers of ordinary people, the sensible and sustainable choice is to keep well-maintained, safe and reliable vehicles running for as long as they are needed.
To make an EV my next vehicle it would need me to either make a conscious choice, disregarding the cost, or for my usage to have to increase by a massive amount ..... or EVs to become mandatory and there simply be no other choice.
Because looking purely at the numbers, an EV makes no sense.
